A Socio-medical Study on Well-Babies

Abstract
A socio-medical study was carried out toward 530 babies who passed the first physical and mental check-up for the final contest of selection "The Best Baby" of the Year of Seoul from 8 April to 25 April 9165.
The followings are the results of this study.
1. Out of the 530 babies(boys; 376, girls; 154) 8 months-old group is most predominant in boys with 11.2 per cent of the total and 7 months-old in girls with 11.8 per cent.
2. In the birth-order, the first son and girl rank highest with 43.4 and 47.4 per cent respectively.
3. In the parental educational accomplishments, college graduates tops with 46.6 per cent among the fathers and high school graduates tops with 27.1 per cent among the mothers.
4. In their father¢¥s occupations, the most numerous is merchant with 26.1 per cent and the next in number is company-employee with 21.7 per cent. Out of the total mother, 89.6 per cent don¢¥t have any definite occupation.
5. Out of the total babies, 68.7 per cent are feeded with mother¢¥s milk, 29.0 percent mother¢¥s milk and occasional artificial milk, and 2.3 per.cent corn flour.
6. The prophylactic vaccinations are virtually much conducted: 96.8 per cent of the total babies are vaccinated against Poliomyelitis. 90.2 per cent D.P.T., 74.7 per cent Smallpox and 57.2 per cent B.C.G.
7. It is observed that 85.3 per cent of the total babies are received institutional health management; 65.5 per cent periodically and 19.8 per cent occasionally. Among the institutions frequently visited for the above purpose, health centers rank highest with 43.4 per cent. private clinics come next with 25.5 per cent and general hospitals third with 16.4 per cent.
8. In their past histories of diseases. the most frequently attached age groups are from 4 months-old up to 8 months-old age groups. The most frequently experienced malad is the disease group of common cold, diarrhea, unknown-fever, etc., and pneumonia, measles and pertusis come next in order.
9. Among their parents, 95.5 per cent of the fathers and 93.2 per cent of the mothers are healthy.
10. The percentage of premature deliveries and abortions experienced by mothers (530 in total) are 2.4 per cent in the former and 13.7 per cent in the latter.
11. It is found that 97.5 per cent of the mothers are assisted at the deliveries.
12. The mode of family size and living room is four persons with one-room.
13. among the structure and the ownership of their houses, rented one-room-house of traditional Korean architecture tops with 19.4 per cent.
14. In the status of physical development, that of the babies surveyed is higher than the standard of the whole Korea, particularly in breast-feeding babies under 11 months-old group.
